"Art,Art,Art!!!Before words Volume 2."

Book Description

Publication Date: March 15, 2014

Volume Two in this series, covers various media of artwork over a great number of years. Drawings, Paintings, Photography and Digital photography are all included. This volume encompasses art from mostly the time frame of 2002-2013. There are some older works, also included, from 1996-1999, but that is the exception and not the rule. Emily's art is colorful, unique, strange, surreal and it flows from the stream of consciousness of Volume One. Readers should enjoy this final part of this series.

This review is from: Art, Art, Art!!! Before Words.: Volume Two (Art, Art, Art! Before words. Book 2) (Kindle Edition)

"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.".. William Shakespeare

If "Art, Art, Art Before Words: Volume Two" was an oversized hardback, it would be considered a "coffee table book". This slim striking colorful volume is a delight to the senses! With only one poem, a condensed autobiography, and over 40 images this is a very quick read; this chapbook continues where "Art, Art, Art Before Words: Volume One" left off.

Artist/poetess Emily Sturgill recalls her experience of attending college and completing her education with a serious mental illness (SMI). A brief chronological outline shows her milestones and academic accomplishments. With her husband Dean encouraging her, she graduated with a masters of education in art education and therapy from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. in 2012. Ms. Sturgill lives in the suburbs outside Detroit with her husband and pets.

The poem: "Painting With Fire" is a joyful expression of creativity, beginning with a hearts desire. The rotation of the nightfall, shooting stars, passion and love, the dawn inviting a new day. Shakespeare is quoted from 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Hamlet'.

Some of the artworks are from Ms. Sturgill's earliest college days (1996) to more recent times. My favorites include:
Detroit Landscape: photography.. 2002 ~ Building #3: photography.. 2002 ~ Church: photography.. 2002 ~ Dream: drawing/mixed media.. 1999 ~ Anger: pen/ink drawing.. 1996 ~ Funky Town: photography.. 2002 ~ Goddess: photography/montage.. 2002 ~ Self Portrait: photography/mixed media.. 2002 ~ Flat Planet June: photography/montage.. 2002 ~ Digital Goddess Montage: photography.. 2002 ~ Self Portraits: webcam.. 2014.

Many thanks, and much appreciation to Emily Sturgill for the paperback edition to this beautiful chapbook. I recommend viewing these artist chapbooks on color e-readers for better clarity of the images.

I really enjoy Ms. Sturgill's artwork. She is a gifted writer as well and I enjoy her poetry books tremendously but it is also nice to view her personal art, some of which she shares in this book. I think readers will enjoy the art and text. I'm a fan of Ms. Sturgill's work. I was pleased to have a careful look at Art, Art Art!!! Before Words. I recommend it to other readers, particularly art fans

Random poetry and just a dashing of art &photography. But mostly, this is primarily a Poetry chapbook. It is roughly around 40-45 pages. It consists of poetry from my journals and some off my two blogs. It is a small and modest collection.

It's very possible that your life in art.. your successful life in art.. might be a struggle from start to finish. ~ Sally Warner
If it adapts itself to what the majority of our society wants, art will be a meaningless recreation. ~ Albert Camus

Maxwell Park is a historical landmark in Detroit MI, the surrounding areas feature older neighborhoods built around the turn of the last century. Many old stately Victorian era craftsman homes adorn some remaining neighborhoods in the Maxwell Park area. Many Detroiters abandoned their homes, caught in severe economic downturn, leaving large areas and blocks of ruin and blighted homes. Detroit was the first US city to file formal bankruptcy in July 2013. Sturgill-(ES) recalls walking to Maxwell Park from her high school, in a beginning poem of her chapbook: "In Exile From Maxwell Park: poems".

ES often writes of her family life in her poetry. "Rust" illustrates what is left of an unspecified father-daughter relationship, "Mother" is filled with a sadness and longing. (ES mother passed away in 2000). "Childhood": various thoughts, impressions, cookies her mother promised to bake. More lines follows of ES painful physical health issues: "My Body Weeps", "Endometriosis is an Endless Sea". The unmistakable depth of her Bipolar mood disorder is further clarified: "Welcome to my thought dungeon", "Room full of Blues". The thought summarizing a song: "Music" also entrapment of anxiety, "ugly memoir", out of mind, "she's trapped in a poets song". ES also records a loving poetry tribute to her husband: "Poem #14" and "Our First Date". "Anniversary Flowers" is a nicely done commemorative photo.
A Trail of Apache Tears: This is a poem ES blogged and read online, I really loved this beautiful, stunning, meaningful tribute to the Native American Spirit. Many of these poems have been previously published, as some of the artwork.

Favorite Art works include: Untitled Watercolor #1 ~ Portrait of Dean ~ Self Portrait #2 ~ Untitled (framed) Star Drawing ~ Portrait/Black Cat (June 2014) ~
ES is a prolific artist, poet/author, blogger, photographer, book reviewer, and advocate for the mentally ill. ES is a graduate of Wayne State University, Detroit MI and holds a M.Ed. in art education and therapy. She lives outside Detroit with her husband and pet family.
